Derby Market Hall Transformation Project is well underway.
Work to repair and refurbish the Victorian iron roof structure at Derby Market Hall is entering the next phase. Our contractors, Wates, have undertaken extensive surveys to the roof to assess the the current condition and this work is complete. The next stage will be to start the repairs to the roof and to replace the glazing panels which is due to start in early 2020.
The impressive roof structure is a cast iron and glass barrel-vaulted roof and local engineer, Rowland Ordish, is responsible for the magnificent design. Ordish’s work includes the Albert bridge in London and the roof span of St Pancras Station and the Royal Albert Hall.
Councillor Mick Barker, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Markets said: “The Market Hall project is of huge importance to us in Derby and we’re delighted to have Wates looking after the refurbishment. The work to the roof marks another step to reaching our goal of this landmark, historic building becoming a key destination for residents, businesses and visitors to the city and providing a memorable and enjoyable experience for customers.”
